Chapter 5 Slideshow

Q View an episode of a crime-themed television show such as CSI,  CSI NY or Miami, Law and Order, Law and Order SVU,  etc. Create a slideshow that describes five of the twelve differences between media cops (you may also discuss the CSI agents) and real cops using the categories found in table 5.1 on pages 115 to 116 (for example, action, crime, violence, etc.) that you view in the episode. You must specifically mention the categories you identify from the table.  All your analysis must come from you and you alone.  You must dedicate two slides to each category (the first should describe the category and the second should provide an example of it found in the television episode you chose).  Your show must contain 10 content slides and 1 title slide.  You must identify the name of the show you are reviewing, the episode number, as well as the season it aired. For example CSI, "The End Game"  Season 15 Episode 18 on a title slide. Your slideshows must be creative, imaginative, and captivating.  You may use the Internet to locate images, however, you do not have to cite them.  You cannot use images alone for your slides, you must include descriptive text.  Please view the FAQ page for assignment requirements.    PreviousNext

The lives of police officers are not as glamorous or thrilling as they appear in the movies or on television. In fact, the media's depiction of police officers in entertainment and infotainment shows a stark contrast to the realities they face daily. The media's portrayal of police officers is vastly different from the reality of the job. The key distinctions lie in their exposure to crime and the legal system, the quantity of activity they see, and the sorts of criminals they face. Furthermore, media portrayals of police personnel are typically overly heroic. All of these components of law enforcement and their job are misrepresented in the media. For most people, their only experience with law enforcement and the criminal justice system comes through media depictions, rather than actual interactions. As a result of watching series like Law and Order: Special Victims Unit and Live PD, the general public has a skewed understanding of what police do and a biased impression of police personnel in general.
